Day before the challenge

Welp... Today was the big shopping trip to start my Whole30 Challenge! Amazon.com has been really slow in shipping me out my copy of It Starts With Food so that I can actually read all the science behind the challenge and all the guidelines that go along with it, so for now I am going off of others' blogs and the Whole30 website to help me begin.

I went to Trader Joes for the first time and I really thought that it would be more fulfilling because of how much everyone raves about that place. Although I did find some really good stuff like almond meal, coconut oil spray, free-range organic chicken broth, etc., it really was not good for produce and their meat options were pretty limited too. They are good at being creative there, not so good at the basics.

After Trader Joes we went to Whole Foods to see if we'd find a few things there. I found the parsnips, cilantro, mushrooms, chard, etc, but I still had a hard time finding spinach, okra, and tomatillos. Their meat was pretty pricey there too, but I guess you're going to pay quite a bit more if you want the free-range or hormone-free meat anywhere.

Its a little discouraging how many stores there are that you need to go to in order to find all the things you need; too bad we don't some sort of little local market, that would be great. Stupid winter. Oh well, I'll figure out a way to narrow down the best places to buy stuff and when.

Overall, I spent about $200 and I think the food will last us a week or more. I probably could cut that cost down by about $50, but it takes a little trial and error.

Sorry the lack of grocery photos... I'm new at the blogging thing, but I will try to do better at posting photos in the future.

On a different note... I had originally planned not to tell the Mr. about my plans for Whole30 and just feed him the same meals as me and see if he would even notice. I didn't think he would, I thought he would just enjoy the fact that I was cooking more. Plus, I didn't really trust him to be open minded about it.... He's not very supportive about natural remedies and new health theories that I am interested in. We got in a pretty decent fight about it. I shouldn't have told him. I know he'll like it once he sees what its like. Wish me luck!
